How to sew a beach cover

Jan 11, 2024

As the season beckons us to the water, we often find ourselves searching for the perfect outfit to slip on between dips in the lake or the pool. If you've been looking for something that's stylish but still low-key — and are in the mood to stretch your sewing muscles a little — this project from Sewing Therapy's Sara SJ Kim could be exactly what you're after.

In this episode of her CBC Life series Sewing School, Sara demonstrates how to sew a beach cover-up from scratch that you can customize to your heart's content, from the fabric you choose to the many different ways you can style it. Opt for all white for a more Grecian-inspired look or go with a fun print like Sara did — and have fun experimenting with all the tying options depending on where you're headed.

"While this dress is simple to make, I have to warn you that there is a lot of straight-stitching and serging involved," Sara said.
